Too Cool for Internet Explorer

Neo Freerunner

The P900 from Sony Ericsson, has been a good companion for 4-5 years, but it's getting old and therefore I've been looking around for something new. Being a big open source believer, I wanted it to be an open phone.

While searching the net I stumbled over the OpenMoko project. Around that time (July 2008), they had just started the production of the Neo FreeRunner, which is and open source project based on Linux. Being a religious open source freak, I just knew I had to own this phone... and fast!

I bought the phone at linux-handhelds.com.

The phone ships with the Om 2007.2 image. This software is developed by the OpenMoko project, and it is an unstable work in progress. Unless you can affort to miss a few phonecalls, or enjoy occasional headaches, you should use the Qt Extended (aka Qtopia) image instead. It is actually quite easy (for a fairly experienced computer user) to replace the image on the phone. See Flashing the phone.

My laptop is running Fedora. Parts of my notes regarding ssh and internet through pc, are therefore somewhat Fedora specific. Go to the OpenMoko wiki to get information on how to communicate with the phone from other distributions.

It's all about freeing the phone
